Servicing Timing and wet belts

Timing & Wet Belts in Sheffield

The timing belt is the one job you shouldn't put off. If the belt goes, the valves hit the pistons and a £500 job turns into a £3,000 engine. If your car is at or near its belt interval, on mileage or on age, whichever comes first, get it booked in.

Wet belts: if you drive a 1.2 PureTech or a 1.0 EcoBoost, read this

A lot of modern small engines, most famously the Citroën, Peugeot and Vauxhall 1.2 PureTech and Ford's 1.0 EcoBoost, run the timing belt inside the engine, in the oil. These "wet belts" can break down from the inside. Bits of rubber end up in the oil, block the pickup and starve the engine, and by then the damage goes well beyond the belt.

Two things really matter with these engines. The belt needs changing on time, often earlier than the original handbook said, because manufacturers have shortened the intervals. And the oil spec has to be exactly right at every service. We do both. The 1.2 PureTech is the engine we know inside out, at a fixed £900 including an oil service. We now take on the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost as well, from £1,100. Ford used several different arrangements, so we confirm the exact figure on your registration before you commit. If you're not sure where your engine stands, ask us to check before it decides for you.

What our belt jobs include

The full kit. Belt, tensioners and idlers, never just the belt.
The water pump replaced where it's belt-driven. It's a few minutes of extra labour now, against paying for the whole job again when the pump goes. We'll always quote it and explain.
The correct spec of oil and coolant on refill.
Genuine OEM or quality branded kits, with a 12-month manufacturer warranty on parts (varies a bit by part and supplier).

When is yours due?

Intervals vary a lot. Anywhere from 60,000 to 120,000 miles, and usually 5 to 10 years whatever the mileage, because rubber ages even if the car mostly sits still. Ring us with your reg and mileage on 0114 698 1430 and we'll look up the schedule and give you a price.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if a timing belt snaps?

On most engines the pistons hit the open valves at speed. Bent valves, a damaged head, and sometimes a written-off engine. Putting the job off rarely saves money in the end.

What's the difference between a wet belt and a normal cambelt?

A wet belt runs inside the engine in oil rather than in a dry housing. When it breaks down it contaminates the oil system, so failures can be worse, and the oil spec and change intervals matter far more.

My car's low mileage. Do I still need the belt done?

Yes, if it's past the age interval. Belts age by time as well as miles, and 5 to 10 years is typical depending on the manufacturer.

How long does the job take?

Usually around a day, though some engines bury the belt deeper than others. We'll tell you exactly when we quote, including whether we'd need the car overnight.

How much does it cost?

It varies a lot by engine, so we don't print one number that would be wrong for most cars. Give us your reg and mileage and we'll quote the full kit price before you book anything.

Excellent service, I had been having problems with my car radio screen for nearly a year, I took it to them and they found the problem straight away and fixed it for me and claimed it on my warranty and I didn’t have to do anything. Also had a service and 2 tyres. They were so helpful, I was very pleased. It feels like I’ve got a new car!

I recently used GT Automotive for a repair through a warranty claim. Matt was very helpful and explained the process. Unfortunately there were some delays for the repair to be done through no fault of the garage but through the warranty company. Matt kept me updated and fought my case for the claim, eventually got the repairs approved and got my car fixed as quick as they could. I've had a hard time in the past finding a garage I can trust, but these are very genuine and I will be using them for all my car needs going forward, and already have my next Service and MOT booked in.
