A warning light tells you where to start looking, not what's wrong. Anyone with a £50 code reader can tell you there's a misfire. The real job is finding out why. A coil, an injector, a vacuum leak, a sensor, and each one is a very different bill. Our equipment gives us manufacturer-level access to almost every major brand, the same systems the main dealers use, backed up with proper testing. You pay to fix the actual fault, once.

Amber or red? Whether to keep driving

A steady amber engine light usually means get it checked soon. Drive gently and book in. A flashing engine light, or a red oil or temperature warning, means stop, because carrying on can wreck the catalytic converter or the engine. If you're not sure, ring us on 0114 698 1430 and describe it. We'll tell you straight whether to drive it in or not.

Straightforward pricing

The diagnostic charge covers the skilled work of finding the fault, and we confirm it before we start. We don't charge you twice for it. If the cure turns out to be a ten-minute job and a £10 part, we're not adding another labour bill on top, and plenty of small faults get sorted within the diagnostic itself. You get a plain explanation of the fault, the fix and the cost before anything else is done.

Frequently asked questions

My engine management light is on but the car drives fine. Do I need to bother?

Yes. The light often comes on for faults you can't feel yet, and some of them quietly damage expensive parts. A misfire can finish off a catalytic converter, for example. Sooner is cheaper.

Can't you just clear the code?

We can, but if the fault is real the light comes back, sometimes right before your MOT. An engine management light on during the test is an automatic fail, so we'd rather find the cause.

How much is a diagnostic check?

Diagnosis is from £120. We confirm the cost before we start, based on the car and the fault. It covers the labour of finding the fault. If the fix is minor we won't stack another labour charge on top of it.

How long does diagnosis take?

Simple faults within the hour. Intermittent electrical problems can take longer, and we'll keep you posted rather than guess.

Excellent service, I had been having problems with my car radio screen for nearly a year, I took it to them and they found the problem straight away and fixed it for me and claimed it on my warranty and I didn’t have to do anything. I recently used GT Automotive for a repair through a warranty claim. Matt was very helpful and explained the process. Unfortunately there were some delays for the repair to be done through no fault of the garage but through the warranty company. Matt kept me updated and fought my case for the claim, eventually got the repairs approved and got my car fixed as quick as they could. I've had a hard time in the past finding a garage I can trust, but these are very genuine and I will be using them for all my car needs going forward, and already have my next Service and MOT booked in.
