Why batteries fail without warning

They don’t fade any more

Older cars would turn over slower and slower for weeks. Stop-start and all the electrics on a modern car mean the battery is worked hard every journey, and when it goes it tends to go all at once.

Cold makes it worse

A battery delivers less power when it is cold, and the engine needs more to start. A battery that just about copes in October can leave you stuck in December.

Short trips don’t recharge it

Lots of five minute runs take more out than the alternator puts back. That is the most common reason we see batteries dying early on town cars.

Battery health

We test the battery’s actual condition, not just the voltage, so you know if it is good, getting tired or about to let you down.

Charging system

We check the alternator is charging properly. A new battery won’t last if the car isn’t charging it.

A straight answer

If it is fine, we tell you and you go. If it needs replacing, we tell you what it needs and the price before anything is done.

New battery fitted properly

On a lot of modern cars a new battery has to be registered to the car so it charges correctly. We do that as part of the job.

It is part of how we look after cars now, because a dead battery is the one breakdown you can see coming if you test for it. Book in for the free test on its own, or have it done while the car is in for a service or MOT.

Is the battery test really free?

Yes. You book the car in, we test the battery and charging system, and there is no charge for the test. If it needs a new battery we give you the price first and it is your call.

How long does it take?

The test itself is quick. If you book it in on its own we will tell you when you can drop the car off and collect it.

How do I know my battery is on its way out?

Often you won’t, which is the problem. Slow starting, warning lights or the stop-start not working can all be signs, but plenty of batteries give no warning at all. Testing is the only way to know.
