Main Dealer or Independent: Will It Void My Warranty?

By the GT Automotive team · 11 October 2026 · 4 min read

Land Rover Defender raised on a two post lift with the bonnet open in the GT Automotive workshop

It’s one of the most common things we get asked on the phone: “If I bring it to you instead of the dealer, will it mess up my warranty?”

Short answer, no. As long as the car is serviced to the manufacturer’s schedule, with the right parts and oil, and it’s all written down properly, you can use whichever garage you like and your warranty stays exactly as it was.

There are a couple of things worth knowing though, so here’s how it actually works.

What the law actually says

Since June 2023 the UK has had its own rules on this, called the Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Order. It replaced the old EU rules after Brexit and it’s in place until 2029.

In plain English, it stops car makers tying you to their dealers for routine servicing. It also means garages like ours get access to the same technical information and tools the dealers use.

What a manufacturer can do is refuse a claim if the service wasn’t done properly, wasn’t done on time, or the wrong parts went in. So it’s not about who does it, it’s about how it’s done.

Three things that keep your warranty safe

1. Stick to the manufacturer’s schedule. The right service at the right time, by date or mileage, whichever comes first. That means everything listed for that service, not just an oil and filter.

2. The right parts and the right oil. Genuine or matching quality parts, and the exact oil spec your engine is meant to have. The spec matters far more than the name on the bottle.

3. Keep the paperwork. A stamped book or an itemised service record, and the invoice to go with it. If you ever need to make a claim, that’s your proof. File them somewhere you won’t lose them.

The one job only a dealer can do

If something goes wrong that your warranty actually covers, the dealer fixes it for free. That’s the one thing an independent can’t do for you, and it’s the same with safety recalls.

Using an independent for your servicing doesn’t change any of that. If we ever spot something on your car that should be a warranty or recall job, we’ll tell you and point you back to the dealer, rather than charge you for it.

So why go independent?

For most people it comes down to price and time. Main dealer labour rates are usually a fair bit higher, and you can be waiting a while for a slot.

With an independent you’re normally talking to the people actually working on your car, not a service desk. And you get told what’s coming up, not sold it today.

Our tip: tyres

The legal limit is 1.6mm, but we’d recommend changing them at 3mm, because below that is when wet grip and stopping distances really start to suffer. So if yours are at 4mm, we’ll tell you they’ve got life left and roughly when they’ll want doing, where some dealers will tell you they need changing now.

How we do it at GT

Every service we do follows the manufacturer’s schedule for your car, with matching quality parts and the correct oil for your engine, and it’s all recorded so your history stays complete.

Servicing starts from £180. That’s a Minor service at £180, Interim at £240 and Major at £300, whatever the engine size. Every car that comes through the workshop also gets a free battery test while it’s with us, because modern batteries don’t struggle first, they just stop.

When you book a service we’ll also tell you how far off your MOT is, so if it’s coming up we can book that in for you at the same time, for £49.95.

Quick questions

Will it affect an extended or used car warranty?

That depends on the terms of that warranty. Most just ask for servicing on time by a VAT registered garage, but check yours, or bring it in and we’ll go through it with you.

Will my service book still be stamped?

Yes. You get a stamped book or a full itemised record, which is exactly what a warranty claim needs.

What about recalls?

Recalls are always done free by the main dealer, whoever services your car. You can check yours on gov.uk.
